
Why Most Coop Heaters Die (And How We Fixed Ours)
Let’s be honest: chicken coops are a nightmare for electronics. Between the thick dust, the ammonia fumes, and that constant dampness, it’s basically a death trap for anything with a circuit board. Most heaters just can’t hack it. They get coated in a layer of grime, overheat, and burn out way too fast. We got tired of seeing that happen, so we built our infrared heaters to actually survive the coop.
The Battle Against the “Fog”
Ever notice how cheap infrared lamps just… quit? Here’s why. In a coop, condensation and dust build up on the quartz tube. We call it “fogging.” When a tiny drop of water hits that scorching hot glass, it causes a thermal shock. It’s like pouring ice water into a hot pan. Tiny micro-cracks form, the filament oxidizes, and snap—your heater is dead. To stop this, we added a specialized anti-fog coating and wrapped everything in a sealed housing. It keeps the moisture off the element. This means the heat stays steady and the glass stays clear, so you aren’t replacing bulbs every few weeks.
Keeping the Water Out
Waterers leak. Coops get hosed down. It happens. If water splashes into an open socket, you’re looking at shorts, corrosion, or worse—arc flashes. We decided to ditch the open-air sockets entirely. Instead, we tucked the wiring into a splash-proof enclosure. By sealing the connectors—which is where 90% of these heaters usually fail—we made something that actually lasts more than one season. It’s just a tougher, safer way to keep your birds warm.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Now, there are a couple of trade-offs. Because of that waterproof casing, the unit is a bit bulkier. Just make sure your mounting brackets can handle the extra weight before you hang it up. Also, while the coating protects the bulb, the outside of the shell can still get dusty. Give it a quick wipe every now and then. If you let a thick layer of dust build up, it acts like a blanket, trapping too much heat inside the shell. A quick clean keeps everything running cool and efficient.
