Let’s be honest: putting an infrared heater in a bathroom ceiling is a bit of a balancing act. You want that instant, cozy heat—especially when you’re stepping out of the shower—but you don’t want a light so bright it feels like you’re staring into the sun. This is a big deal when you’ve got babies or toddlers in the house whose eyes are way more sensitive than ours. So, how do we get the heat without the glare? It starts with the light itself. Most standard infrared lamps blast out a harsh, bright white light. Nobody wants that. To fix this, we tweak the filament and the gas inside the tube to shift the energy. Instead of a piercing flash, you get a soft, warm glow. It’s much easier on the eyes, but you still feel the warmth hitting you the second you turn it on. Then, there’s the glass and the shape. The quartz tube isn’t just there to hold everything together. We add specific coatings to the glass that act like a filter. They block the nasty UV rays and the blinding light, but let the heat slide right through. We also tuck the heater deep into a Recessed reflector. Think of it like a spotlight, but for heat. It pushes the warmth down in a concentrated cone and keeps the actual bulb out of your direct line of sight. The honest trade-off. Here is the catch: when you soften the light, you lose a tiny bit of that “instant punch” you get from raw short-wave lamps. You might notice it takes a few extra seconds to feel the room warm up. But for us, that’s a trade we’re happy to make for the sake of safety. To make up for it, we just bump up the wattage. You still get the comfort; it just doesn’t come with a headache. One quick tip for the install: If you’re wiring these into a ceiling grid, please make sure there’s plenty of breathing room in the housing. These units put out a lot of power, and if the air can’t move in the plenum, the thermal cut-off will trip and shut everything down. Give it some air, and you’re good to go.
